In the contemporary scene I am looking at the codes of language and mapping, and how they interact with each other. Whether we know or subliminally follow these suggestions, I can’t be sure, but they do exist in guiding us in one way or another. This work came about from hearing a short monologue by Ultron (yes the Marvel movie) of Pinocchio like existence in the technological world. The discovery that a programmed machine can be free and have no strings in the same way Pinocchio wanted to free of his strings to become a real boy. Or relationship to the language of the space we live in, and our freedom to pass through it unabated. Guy Debord used the term ‘derive’ where he would travel through Paris with his friends and fellow psychogeographers without having anything apart from chance guiding him as to his destination. In this technological world can we still wander unabated and discover new places or are there string attached and we are forced and herded from one place to the next?
